This Sunday 6-16-19 sees San Diego Legion take on the Seattle Seawolves in the final of only the second season of the MLR. The game takes place in San Diego at 4pm Eastern. As was the case for the semi-finals, the game will be televised live on CBS.
San Diego Legion and the Seattle Seawolves have played each other twice previously this season. In February, the Seawolves hosted the Legion with the Legion winning the game 17-13 in torrential rain.
Fast forward to the end of March and it was San Diego’s turn to host this clash. An incredibly physical game saw the Legion win 28-22 against the Seawolves to make it 2 from 2.
Road to the final
The Seawolves are the defending champions having won the title in 2018 and it would be a major feat to win it 2 years in a row given the expansion of the league this season (With further expansion for the 2020 season).
The Seawolves booked their place in the final last week based on the foundations of a terrific first half display in which they led the Toronto Arrows 23-7 at half time. The Arrows did fight back in the second half of the game but it was not enough to see off the Seawolves as they won the game 30-17.
The Seawolves are 4 wins from 5 going into the final, with convincing wins coming in their last 2 games which will surely boost their confidence.
The San Diego Legion beat RUNY in Southern California last week to secure their place in the Championship final. Man of the match JP du Plessis showed his class to score in the corner in the dying minutes of the game and level the match 22-22 in the 79th minute. The effervescent Joe Pietersen then stood up to calmly slot the conversion from close to the touchline to clinch the game 24-22.
The Legion have been on an incredible run, losing just one game in their last 10, with that loss coming at the hands of the Arrows at the beginning of May.
Prediction for the title
A final is always tough to call as either of these teams are capable of beating each other on any given day. In the Seawolves favour, they can take solace from an almost complete first half performance against the Arrows which set them up to win the game. The Seawolves also showcased their counter attack game which saw them score the opening 2 tries of the semi final game in spectacular fashion. If the Seawolves can disrupt the structure of the game and impose their free flowing game, this will be the Seawolves best chance of clinching the title again.
The Legion will be taking heart from their win streak on the road to the final, losing just a single game of their previous ten. The Legion’s defensive structure is also an element which has set them apart this season. If the Legion can maintain this structure and along with home advantage, it could be the deciding factor in this game.
Prediction: San Diego Legion.
